Tonight on ESPN the Chicago Cubs will look to make it a 3-game sweep against bitter rivals the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs shutout the Cardinals on Friday 5-0, and held on to defeat them 6-5 on Saturday. The Cards had won 8 in a row before losing the finale against Philadelphia on Thursday. Chris Carpenter will look to stop this 3-game losing streak. He brings an 11-3 record and 3.05 ERA into the contest. He's a perfect 8-0 in night games this year. Over the past few seasons, he has dominated the Cubs. The last 7 times these two have met with Carpenter on the mound, the Cards are 6-1 and Carpenter has an ERA of 1.72. Ryan Dempster has benefited from great run support lately and it's a good thing. Dempster is 8-7 overall with a 3.70 ERA, but in his last 3 starts his ERA is 4.86. The Cubs have won all 3 of those starts thanks to 11 runs per game of support. The Cardinals are only a half game behind the Reds and are looking to turn their recent skid around. Outfielder Ryan Ludwick is back from the 15-day DL and should help get the offense back on track.
With Carpenter's perfect night record and recent success against the Cubs, I have no other choice than to take the Cards in this one.
